Inscriptions

Inscriptions during the life of Commodus reveal much about how he and others perceived the emperor.  Names and political titles were important to understanding the reign of Commodus.  By adopting names, such as “Roman Hercules,” Commodus could physically carry out his public image campaign through inscriptions.  Lineage held similar importance, as some inscriptions would list out Commodus’ lineage alongside his name. The importance of inscriptions extended beyond the lifetime of the emperor they mention, and many writings of Commodus were scratched out from the stone.  Although inscriptions at first appear to be simple writings and dedications, they can reveal much about the life of the emperor they mention.
