Emperor Nero ruled from 54-68 A.D. after his adoptive father Emperor Claudius died. While Nero’s rule was relatively short compared to many Emperors, his legacy has survived the test of time. Many people know him as the Emperor who watched Rome burn, but that ignores a great of Nero’s rule. Contrary to what many people believe today, Nero was not such a terrible Emperor. He was incredibly popular with the ordinary Roman due to his love of festivals, games, and the congiarium. He was, however, not very popular with Senate and Equestrian class because of his excess.
